The Future Of The Pickup Truck…Is Electric?

The Future Is Coming, Silently…

Well, that is if Rivian has anything to do with it. The Michigan based company, who develop vehicles for sustainable transportation, have recently filed to patent their modular Electric R1T pickup truck beds.

The significance of this patent is that it details, “Systems and methods for reconfigurable electric vehicles”, meaning that Rivian are planning on creating a pick-up with interchangeable truck beds.

Now modular vehicles have been done before, but they’ve never had integration with the vehicle dynamics and performance like this. That is because the overall vehicle characteristics automatically change when it detects a new module. The patent application identifies 5-bed configurations from camper back to chassis cab.

If Rivian actually manages to bring their R1T electric pickup truck to market next year with even slightly similar specs to what they’ve been claiming, that itself will be something to shout about. But if the company brings some of its patent applications to the final production unit, this could be a game-changer in not only the electric pickup market but the entire automotive industry.
